Tom flies in 70 years on

There might have seemed nothing remarkable about the arrival of a light aircraft at Pocklington airfield on Saturday but on board was a man who last landed on that runway over 70 years ago.

Heads turned comp

Tom Sayer DFM was a pilot with 102 Ceylon Squadron flying Halifax bombers from Pocklington in 1943 and 1944. He had flown up from High Wickham with Andy Hardy in Andy’s Cherokee.

Touch down comp

Until recently Tom was chairman of the 102 Squadron Association and although a regular visitor to Pocklington over many years this was his first return by air to his wartime base.
