Love was in the air at gliding club Taster Day
Congratulations to Yifen Xu and Jan van der Hoek! Here's the Taster Day press release that didn't seem to get published anywhere.....
LOVE WAS IN THE AIR ON GLIDING CLUB TASTER DAY
Love was in the air as the sun was setting after a very successful open day at the Wolds Gliding Club in Pocklington on Saturday 4th July. Instructor Jan van der Hoek had arranged to fly the last flight of the day with his partner of three years, Yifen Xu. Jan, an ophthalmologist, of York, has been learning Mandarin Chinese and at 1000 feet popped the question “Ni xiang jia gei wo ma?” which he hoped meant “Will you marry me?”. Yifen, who is also from York and has just completed a PhD in education and leadership at Manchester University, said “Hao ba”, “OK!”
Despite overnight thunderstorms and a misty morning the flying got going at lunchtime and more than 150 visitors had a chance to try gliding for themselves. They also had tours of the club facilities, learned about Pocklington airfield’s history as a Second World War bomber base and many visitors tried the club’s gliding simulator. The day raised a total of £200 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance from the Club’s pledge of £1 for each visitor flight and a collection.
Club chairman Graham Wadforth said “It was a fine team effort to fly that many visitors in spite of the late start because of the weather and the day was a great success. Everyone I spoke to enjoyed the day. We have had many enquiries about learning to glide and have already gained several new members from the day. “
